NEURONTIN

NEURONTIN

Made by Pfizer, Neurontin is an anti-seizure drug. “It affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the ‘cause’ of seizures- however, the exact way that it works is unknown”.

(Excuse me, but if the way it works is ’unknown’- how can they claim that it affects nerves that are involved in the ‘cause’ of seizures?- G.E.) Long term side-effects are also not known, since it has only been available for a few years in the U.S. (www.druginfonet.com).

Neurontin entered the U.S. market in February of 1994 as a powerful epilepsy drug. Recently Pifizer pleaded guilty to a two count criminal suit, charging them with violating the FDA by misbranding Neurontin uses. They were ordered to pay a $240 million criminal fine; the 2nd largest criminal fine in a health care fraud prosecution. Neurotin was aggressively marketed to treat things like bipolar, mental disorders, pain disorders, ALS, attention deficit disorder, migraines, drug/alcohol withdrawal seizures, and restless leg syndrome, which were not FDA approved (www.druginfonet.com).
