Lasix is a potent ‘Loop Diuretic’ that acts in the kidneys to remove excess water from the blood, by causing an increase in the removal of minerals, such as potassium and sodium. Water is drawn out of the blood, into the kidneys, where it is excreted. This removal of these ‘necessary minerals’ from the blood vessels, causes a decrease in the volume of fluid circulating through the blood vessels. The theory is; this drop in fluid volume decreases the effort required by the heart to pump blood around the body. So it is prescribed for conditions such as heart failure. Being a naturopath, I simply must ask the question; Wouldn’t it be better to heal the heart with Hawthorn Berry? Especially when we look at the adverse side-effects of this drug:
- disturbance of electrolytes
- headache
- muscle cramps
- diarrhea
- constipation
- nausea
- abdominal pain
- vomiting
- photosensitivity
- gout
- high uric acid levels
- kidney problems
